Wolfs
Before Brad Pitt straps in for Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming film, F1, I finally got around to watching the last movie he appeared in, Wolfs.
Co-led by George Clooney, the movie follows two professional fixers who are forced to work together on a job, despite their preference to operate as lone wolves.
Now, conceptually, that does sound pretty interesting. Clooney and Pitt have worked well together in the past, so watching them get into shenanigans together should have made for a really fun movie. Especially since the film was helmed by Jon Watts, who previously directed every movie in the Spider-Man: Homecoming trilogy. Because, while some people may have issues with those films, I don’t think anyone would deny that they are all, in fact, fun. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man trilogy has a joyful personality to it; it has a ton of heart; and it has plenty of charm.
Unfortunately, Wolfs has none of those things.
Which is insane, especially since it stars two of the most charismatic actors working in Hollywood. But their characters are terribly uninteresting. They have no real defining character traits outside of the fact that they’re both professional fixers. They don’t even have names! Even worse, the two characters are exactly the same. There’s nothing to distinguish them from one another. So, I’m sure Clooney and Pitt gave the best performances they could with the material they were given; it’s just a shame that their best wasn’t enough to elevate said material.
Plus, the story wasn’t too compelling, and the action scenes weren’t even too engaging. Seriously, the climactic shootout was probably one of the most boring action sequences that I’ve seen in a long time.
So the movie didn’t have a lot going for it, aside from the fact that it had a sleek visual aesthetic. But having a nice look wasn’t enough to make for a good film. Meaning that, I understand why Apple decided not to move forward with a sequel.
And Watts has done good work outside of his Spider-Man trilogy. I may not have loved Cop Car, but I thoroughly enjoyed his work on Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. So it’s a shame that this movie turned out to be a huge disappointment.
As much as I wanted to like this film, Wolfs would unfortunately not get a recommendation from me.
