Alien: Earth (Finale)
“The Real Monsters”
As the hybrids are imprisoned by Neverland security, Wendy convinces the Lost Boys that they should be the ones to be afraid of, and uses her abilities to shut down the facility's power.
Frustrated, Kavalier approaches the hybrids and tries to threaten them - revealing that, when he was six years old, he built his own synthetic to kill his abusive father. Though, that may not have been the best anecdote to give them, since his own "kids" definitely have the ability to kill him. Something he seems to be ignorant about, until Wendy unlocks their cell, and Nibs kills Kavalier's bodyguard.
So Kavalier flees, and the hybrids seperate in order to capture the remaining adults. Wendy heads to find Joe, of course, though she's still struggling with his decision to shoot Nibs; believing that he chose to ally himself with the humans instead of with her. Which is a pretty childish way to view the complicated situation, but then again, even in spite of her awesome abilities, she is just a child. Either way, she ultimately decides to unlock his cell. Though his life is immediately put in danger, as Atom Eins lures him into Kavalier's room with the one-eyed octopus.
Wendy arrives to save him and, once she finds out that Atom is a synthetic himself - probably the one that Kavalier referred to earlier - she takes control of his motor functions.
Meanwhile, a fight breaks out between Morrow and Kirsh, where Kirsh ends up being badly damaged. But Smee and Slightly arrive to take both of them, while Nibs manages to capture Dame.
Other security members are killed by the other alien creatures, while the one eyed octopus escapes to the beach, where it then possesses Arthur's corpse. Which is just… so unfortunate. The poor man didn't even deserve to die, let alone have this happen to him.
That being sad, I can't deny that I am morbidly curious to find out how the alien will act while controlling a scientific mind like Arthur's. If it can understand the concept of Pi in the body of a sheep, imagine what it can do in the body of a researcher. Granted, we did see it in a human body before, and all it did was screech at the Xenomorph, but maybe this time will be different.
Regardless, Wendy and Joe capture Kavalier with the help of the older Xenomorph, and lock him in a cell with Kirsh, Atom, Dame, and Morrow.
Yutani and her team are seen approaching the island, but with both Xenomorphs under her control, Wendy declares, "Now, we rule." Which, I think, is meant to imply that Wendy and the hybrids are actually the real monsters here. And that makes sense; especially since they're unlike anything else that has ever existed. I mean, they're already unbelievably powerful, and they're only going to keep evolving. So, since I definitely want to see what that evolution is going to look like, I can't wait to see season two of Alien: Earth. Especially since I have a few questions left from this season.
Like: why was Kirsch acting so weird throughout the season? Did he have a secret plan outside of his programming to Boy Kavalier? If he does, that's never explicitly stated, so his behavior didn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
And, if this season takes place after the first Alien film, then how do these characters know what a Xenomorph is? Because the word Xenomorph is never even said in the first film; so who actually came up with this name? When was it universally accepted - in canon - as the official designation of this alien species?
I don’t know. But, other than those things, I absolutely loved this series!
For the first time since the first two Alien films, I was actually engaged by the concepts and the characters. Because they made for a surprisingly damn good story. One that didn't even really involve the Xenomorph!
So, I can't commend Noah Hawley enough; he took a nearly 50 year old franchise, and told a compelling original story. That's not easy to do. But he did it. And this isn't only a good Alien project; this is a damn good science-fiction series. Period.
So, if you couldn't tell by the tone of this review, Alien: Earth would definitely get a recommendation from me.
